Now is the perfect time to set aside time for self and business reflection as we head into the end of the year. Look at what went well, what went wrong, and how you can improve personally and professionally. Then, with the new year, comes new personal and professional business goals and the process begins again.
Are you being as strategic as you can be as an executive? Avoid making the same mistakes and set goals for improving by brushing up on important lessons you should know as an executive. To be a truly great leader:
Lesson #1: Be Humble
This is a lifelong leadership goal that can always be improved on. Great leaders are equal parts driven and confident as they are humble. This isn’t always easy, especially when you’re trying to grow your business, but being humble is critical for the health and well being of your business and employees. Never underestimate how far humble self-awareness will take you in your relations with your employees and your relations to outside stakeholders. Humble leaders make better leaders.
Lesson #2: Lead By Example
To inspire your team and set them and your business up for success, start with yourself. Do you want your employees to work hard? You need to work hard as well. Do you want your team to learn from their mistakes? Then you must learn from yours. Leading by example is effective and will make others want to follow you. It will also lessen any resentment that may be felt from employees. When you get in the nitty gritty with them, respect will come naturally.
Practice patience as well. Great leaders don’t become great and achieve immediate success overnight. Your business will also take time to grow and that’s how it should be. It takes time to make important business decisions. Patience will ensure you make the right decisions for your business and employees.
Leason #3: Be Positive
We recently wrote a blog about the power of positive thinking, which will undeniably lead to success. Positive thoughts lead to positive actions and greater resiliency for when things inevitably don’t go as planned. When you maintain a positive outlook as a leader, you will inspire and encourage your team to have the same positive mindset and resiliency.
When thinking about growing your business, who wants to work with someone who is negative and inflexible? No one. The pressures of growing your business are many but can be significantly mitigated through a positive attitude.
